Preparing All Teacher Candidates to Enact Transformative Teaching Within Clinical Field Experiences: A Design-Development Study

Abstract

Seven university-based teacher preparation programs in the state of Texas collaborated with two educational foundations to design reforms in clinical field experiences. In this roundtable, we present findings from Year 0, in which we chartered a course of improvement across institutions around a central aim. We focus on four areas of reform for reducing variability in the clinical field experience: Exploring program visions and enactments, teacher candidate support, mentor and field experiences support, and building reciprocal professional communities. We share our research design, developed through design-development research, as well as preliminary findings of the highest leverage actions to initiate change within institutions towards the preparation of transformative teachers.
