Constructionism in Maker-Centered Learning: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

Constructionism has been used for the framework for maker-centered learning, and work in makerspaces, but researchers have been relying on the simple definition of constructionism as “learing-by-making” in their work (Papert, 1991, p. 1). By utilizing a reductionist version of constructionism, researchers are not fully implementing constructionism when researching and designing maker-centered learning activities. In this paper, we will identify major themes present in Papert’s constructionism in terms of the role of the learner, facilitator, tools, and address considerations of diversity. A critical systematic review is then conducted evaluating studies using constructionism as the theoretical framework using these themes.
