Who Is In and Who Is Out in Multicultural Education?

Abstract

Despite growing scholarly attention to multicultural education since the Civil Rights Movement (Banks, 2013; Sleeter, 1996), most scholarship in this field focuses on pre-service teacher practices; rather, investigating the multicultural education syllabi that could determine what type of instruction pre-service teachers will be indoctrinated into that could impact teacher beliefs and overall practice; 1) assimilation, 2) tolerance or 3) critical (Gorski, 2012; Jenks et al., 2001). One of the greatest challenges to multicultural education is that the curriculum was birthed out of struggle (Banks, 1988) while simultaneously truncated from any social movement (Sleeter, 1996)-- even though its origin can be traced back to Black Intellectualism.
