Student Perceptions of Engagement in Online Courses: An Exploratory Study

Sat, April 18, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Given the increasing numbers of students who opt for online learning, it is important to understand what conditions are necessary for student success. We know from previous work that student engagement is essential for student learning, retention, persistence, and satisfaction. In this descriptive qualitative study, we sought to understand student perceptions of engagement in online courses and to understand what elements students perceive to be engaging. We interviewed and surveyed 80 students. We uncovered several key themes related to types of engagement including behavioral engagement, cognitive engagement, social engagement, emotional engagement, and agentic engagement. Additionally, we found specific course elements that students find engaging. We offer suggestions for faculty and instructional developers on engaging students in the online learning environment.
