Studying the Learning Environment of Newcomer Students in the Schooling Process

Abstract

This study examined the schooling process of secondary students using surveys with newcomer students (NS) (n = 179) and general ELs (n = 89). We employed a quantitative analysis to detect group differences on perceptions of the classroom learning environment as a function of time in the U.S. We also conducted focus groups with NS (n=10) and educators (n=12). Through qualitative measures, we examined grade level placement, content area placement, as well as academic challenges confounded by L1 proficiency, previous academic experiences, and socio-cultural experiences. Additionally, a Principal Component Analysis was performed to provide in-depth understanding for the future development of effective classroom learning environments. The implications for teaching and learning practices within the classroom environment for NS are also discussed.
