The Classroom Environment and Teachers' Training and Experience in Supporting Young Children's Learning of Science

Abstract

The preschool years offers many opportunities for children to learn and experience science. Young children are curious about the world around them and continuously explore their environments. The purpose of the study is to examine how the classroom environment offers opportunities for exploration and what instructional approaches and resources used by teachers may support children’s science learning and development and compensate for their limited educational training. Nineteen preschool teachers teaching in the private sector signed consent forms to be interviewed and observed in their classrooms. Results demonstrate how teachers with more experience design their science areas, implement science-related activities, and use traditional resources compared to less experienced teachers. The findings highlight the importance of professional development for new teachers.
