Abstract

Given the increasingly diverse student populations in our school settings in the U.S., it is essential to find ways to enhance children’s understanding of diverse cultural values and practices. In this qualitative research study, the aim was to examine the text of a well-known child storybook, Cinderella, and assess cultural differences and similarities in eight cross-cultural versions of Cinderella stories and identify the different cultural aspects inherent in the same story. Using a content-analyzes in analyzing the text of different cross-cultural versions of Cinderella storybooks, the following three themes were identified: (1) daily life issues, (2) clothing and eating habits, (3) Cinderella’s personality traits. Our preliminary results have implications for educators, teachers, and parents working with little children.
