Findings from a mixed methods study of experiences of principals using data analysis tools in a K‒12 system included the types of data and tools used, how they were used, and what factors influenced use. Activity theory and UX principles were used to organize themes that emerged from survey data, interviews, and think-aloud sessions. Principals described the impact of data analysis tools on their work and challenges to effective use. Tensions were identified that exist between theory and practice along with implications for stakeholders such as district leaders and tool designers.
