The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the only nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America’s students in public and private schools know and are able to do in various subjects. Private schools have participated in NAEP for decades, providing a critical dataset for analyzing education in the U.S. and comparing student achievement based on educational settings. This paper explores important insights for private schools available through NAEP, including private school performance over time; private school performance compared to public school performance; and the educational experiences of private school students. This paper also highlights the importance of private school participation to ensure comprehensive education data are available.
