Assessing the Effectiveness of School Positive Behavior Management Program in Barbadian Secondary Schools: Teachers' Voices

Abstract

This study determined teachers’ assessment of School Positive Behaviour Management Programme (SPBMP) which is an approach which emphasizes the reinforcement of positive behavioural norms as a means of building student-centered school environments. A descriptive survey research design was employed to collect data from 177 teachers from four Barbadian secondary schools. Moreover, influence of gender, training status and experiences of the teachers on their perceptions were investigated. The findings revealed that the teachers perceived the SPBMP was effective in the areas of decreasing student infractions and motivating students but there was a lack of buy-in from staff towards the SPBMP intervention. Although, there were management teams installed schools, there was a mixture of responses regarding the efficiency of the management teams.
