Developing a Positive School Climate and Student Success: A High-Poverty Urban High School Leadership Challenge

Abstract

This observational case study describes one urban high school, identified as a failing school ten years ago, located in a high poverty neighborhood. Under new leadership, student outcomes steadily improved. In recent school climate surveys, stakeholders consistently rate the school very high, particularly regarding high expectations for student success. Using data collected in observations and interviews, the specific leadership behaviors and practices the stakeholders believe contribute to the positive school climate and improved student outcomes are described in four themes: A Caring School Culture; Trustworthy Leadership; Rigorous Instruction; and, Strong Systems of Support. The purpose of the study is to inform schools who face similar challenges, and provide specific leadership practices and strategies to help them improve.
