Mujeres de Éxito: Resilience of Latina STEM Majors at an R1 Hispanic-Serving Institution in Texas

Abstract

Retention and persistence for Latina students in the STEM fields in Texas is explored in this study. Resilience theory guides the formulation of preliminary hypotheses regarding cultural reasons and successful strategies for students’ retention and completion of a STEM degree at a Research One - Hispanic Serving Institution in Texas. The study is conducted with a qualitative research methodology and case study approach. Participants include 20 undergraduate students in STEM majors. Themes that have emerged answering the research question from the preliminary analysis of the interviews include positive statements of hope, seeking resilience, dealing with transitions, feelings of isolation, feeling different, and cultural considerations.
