The exploration of teaching practices used in real science classrooms and the comparison of those across countries can inform future action regarding science teaching. A large-scale, nationally representative 2015 PISA data were used to analyze the patterns and variations of the teaching practices of six countries or regions employing a Rasch rating scale model. Students in Australia, Taipei, and Hong Kong are exposed to more teacher-directed instruction, whereas those in Macao, Korea, and the United States more often learn science through inquiry-based instruction. U.S. science teachers exhibit more diverse teaching practices than their counterparts. The findings of this study help build a comprehensive understanding of science teaching practices in different countries, and such understanding provides insights for future teaching strategies.
