Toward Humanization: Critical Pedagogy in the Digital Age

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

While the neoliberal restructuring of public education has been widely documented, less attention has been paid to the ways in which technology has been the central conduit through which such restructuring has been made possible. As such, I argue, we are observing a neoliberal, technological, restructuring of public education that must be confronted in order to fulfill the demands of a robust, democratic, educational program that is aligned with the philosophy of Paulo Freire and the spirit of critical pedagogy more broadly. By showing that current “educational technology,” as it is currently conceived, is at odds with the project of critical pedagogy, I argue for a reassessment of the relationship between technology and schools.
