Beyond the Bomb: A Self-Study of Technology, Diversity, and Community Engagement

Fri, April 17, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Los Alamos, New Mexico played a unique role in the building of the Atomic bomb and conducting high-level weapons research. During the World War II and in the post-war period, civilians and military officers have worked on various projects at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The purpose of this self-study of teacher education practice was to unpack what we have learned about gathering the documents about socially-charged issues that reverberate both through the past and into the future. We explored the process of working to acknowledge diverse perspectives about the making of the atomic bomb and its use. We embraced the opportunity to make complex curriculum making work that builds on and honors community knowledge.
