Latinx Educator Pathways: The Challenges and Possibilities of Interinstitutional Partnerships

Abstract

This study highlights findings from 40 qualitative interviews and 2 focus groups with students in the Educadores Para La Comunidad Program, an inter-institutional initiative in Washington that supports Latinx students interested in pursuing P-12 teaching careers. This research examines the impact of Educadores on participants’ educational trajectories as they transfer from the community college to a 4-year institution, complete their degrees and teaching licensures, and returning home to teach. Findings indicate that Educadores significantly impacted student retention but found that the majority of participants diverted from teacher education for several reasons, including admissions barriers, time to degree, and the culture of the 4-year institution. Implications for policy changes to create pathways for Latinx students toward teaching professions are discussed.
