Abstract

Critical Race Feminism (CRF) guides this qualitative research study which uses narrative inquiry methods to explore the lived realities of Black women pursuing doctoral degrees at a large urban Minority Serving Institution (MSI). Employing the methodological tools of written reflection and semi-structured interviews, this study looks at the individual and collective narratives of Black women pursuing doctoral degrees within the fields of liberal arts, social science, and education. This research is significant as it adds to the understanding of the experiences of Black women matriculating through advanced graduate programs within racially diverse institutional contexts and provides insight that may also be useful for in addressing the issues of diversity along the academy’s student to faculty pipeline.
