This paper discusses a professional development workshop that was conducted with boxing coaches and mentors for the purposes of developing culturally responsive computing activities for a boxing gym that predominantly services African American youth. The workshop had the twin goals of broadening the participation of minoritized youth in computing education and designing activities where computing could be shown to aid the localized goals of the gym. The discussion here focuses on the lessons we, as workshop facilitators, learned when collaborating with boxing coaches and enrolling their expertise in the design of culturally and athletically rich computational activities.
