Adult Social and Emotional Learning and Continuous Improvement: Creating the Conditions for Conversations That Supportively Challenge

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Our research takes a partnership approach between our community-university program and teacher leaders and principals from three public schools who are leading their colleagues in continuous improvement. We explore the intersection of adult social and emotional (SEL) and practitioner learning about student learning within professional learning communities (PLCs) through examining perceptions of adult learning conversations that build educator self awareness. To better understand the SEL requirements of the continuous improvement work within PLCs, we take a nested partnership approach, learning with teacher and school leader partners what they are learning about their colleagues’ experience in PLC learning conversations. We highlight collective learning about the practice of “supportive challenge” within adult learning conversations as a driver for instructional and systems change.
