Learners may experience high cognitive load in a complex environment like Digital game-based learning environment (DGBLE) Without proper support. Various meta-cognitive supports have been developed to support learners’ in-game problem solving. We used meta-analytical techniques to unpack the effect of metacognitive supports in the digital game-based learning environment (DGBLE). In addition, the results revealed this effect is moderated by the phase of self-regulated learning they support. However, the effect remains heterogeneous which suggests the complexity of designing meta-cognitive supports in DGBLE.
