Beyond Perseverance: Supporting Mathematics Smartness in Group-Worthy Tasks

Tue, April 21, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Groupworthy tasks are one way to increase equity and access to mathematics learning in the classroom. When teachers successfully implement groupworthy tasks, they are able to provide opportunities for students to bring different intellectual strengths to collaborative problem solving. However, successful use of groupworthy tasks requires that teachers have strong understandings of different types of mathematical smartness so that they can craft tasks that are more than traditional group work. This study explores the relationship between new teachers’ understandings of students’ smartness in mathematics and how they plan to implement groupworthy tasks in their classrooms.
