Supporting Ed.D. Students' Dissertation Efforts Using Leader Scholar Communities: A Preliminary Investigation

Abstract

In this study, we examined how Leader Scholar Communities (LSCs) supported EdD students as they engaged in their dissertation work. LSCs are groups of 6-7 students and faculty members who worked together and afforded support—academic, socio-emotional, etc. and supportive functions—accountability, sharing information, etc. We explored students’ perceptions of support and supportive functions based on their LSC experiences and how this aided them in completing the dissertation process. Results/findings from surveys and interviews were complementary and indicated students felt they were supported and they indicated the supportive functions were also beneficial in completing their dissertations. In the final paper (see Significance), we will describe implications for program design and implementation and student/practitioner agency that are based on the findings.
