Images and Identities

Abstract

The paper is organized around three interconnected themes: (1) it describes the four-year long development of an identity-centered photo-based research method focused on aesthetics, identity and sovereignty and thus contributes to axiological innovations (Bang, et al., 2016) in community-based design research; (2) theorizing the use and meaning of images, I present a view of photography with a special epistemic access to the cognition of self; (3) lastly, grounded in work on identity resources and practice linked identities (Nasir & Hand, 2008; Nasir & Cooks, 2009), the understanding of photographic images that emerges from this work suggests that photographs serve as complex mirrors outside (Prinz, 2012, 2013) that make visible identities within figured worlds.
