Initial Development of the Teaching Interpersonal Skills (TIPS) for Telehealth Checklist

Abstract

The growing number of patients using telehealth and virtual environments for communication of medical information underscores the importance of evaluating clinician skills. In this study, we designed a checklist to evaluate interpersonal skills in care via telehealth for educators and managers across disciplinary roles. Through a multi-method design approach, we reviewed existing literature, surveyed experienced practitioners, and conducted initial testing in an iterative process with a multidisciplinary group. Results confirmed categories and subskills for interpersonal communication demonstrating inter-rater reliability of practitioner ratings on checklist items. Initial testing supported use of this evaluation measure. Rigorous pilot testing for validation of the checklist is still needed. Ultimately, performance on the checklist of non-technical skills could help evaluate competence and tailor learning activities.
