Redesign of the Education Doctorate: One University's Experiment

Abstract

The Education Doctorate program at a school of education in a mid-Atlantic state underwent significant redesign from summer 2017 through summer 2019. Research and specialty-area faculty collaborated to develop a framework used to guide the EdD program redesign, drawing upon the work of the Carnegie Project for the Education Doctorate (CPED). Four central levers for change emerged: (1) framing the EdD as a practitioner/scholar program; (2) developing and sustaining a focus on the Problem of Practice; (3)a shift from in-person courses shared with PhD programs to an asynchronous online, EdD-specific inquiry course sequence, and; (4) agreement upon the competencies central to the development of the practitioner (Shulman, 2005).
