The discussion of discipline in charter schools versus non-charter schools generally refers to the K-12 system. However, there are charter schools that serve students at the preschool level. This paper builds on the literature by looking at school type in the context of preschool suspension. In order to further understand preschool suspension, this paper investigates whether school type (charter vs. non-charter) would account for any differences in number and rates of single and multiple suspensions using a national dataset. Findings indicate that rates of both single and multiple suspensions are higher in charter schools. Also, of those students suspended a disproportionate amount are black females. This has implications for creating equitable learning environments.
