Voices From the Recess Field: Perceptions of Recess Equipment Provisions

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

School-based physical activity (PA) promotion and PA opportunities increase PA in youth. Lunch recess time in schools is an integral setting where students can participate in moderate-to-vigorous-physical activity. Informed by Social Learning Theory and the Social-Ecological Model, this study investigates stakeholders’ perceptions of the effectiveness of equipment provisions during middle school lunch recess at a rural school. Three major themes were identified in the data: (a) unmotivated, (b) unequipped, and (c) unquestionable changes. Equipment provisions may be a cost-effective and sustainable idea to improve students’ PA in rural communities.
