Extracurricular Activities and Science Education: In the Perspective of Individual and School-Level Effects

Abstract

The extracurricular activities have been considered as one of the most essential influencing aspects of college entrance and students’ academic achievements (e.g., Lipscomb, 2007; Metsäpelto & Pulkkinen, 2012). However, some moderating factors are not examined in separate levels, and the effect has not been discussed enough. The current research is aiming to explore the variation of participants’ science achievement scores within and between schools and the association between students’ background factors and their science achievement scores. Furthermore, in the perspective of the school sector and school mean socioeconomic status (SES), the differences in the above relationship will be further explored in the current study.
