Summer Reading Program to Prevent Summer Reading Loss: Building Motivation and Comprehension in Rising Third Graders

Sat, April 18, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Through a partnership with a public elementary school and a private non-profit college a Summer Reading Program was launched. The goal was to prevent summer reading loss for rising third graders attending Charles Elementary School, where 33% of the third graders are not yet proficient. This research examines how a summer reading program for children between their second and third grade school year impacts opportunities for the students to be more successful as readers. Using both qualitative and quantitative data, findings indicate the program impacted the children’s reading comprehension and motivation.
