Grit, Self-Efficacies, and GPA in Historically Black College and University Students

Abstract

There exist very few studies that examine the unique self-concept profiles of African American college students attending a historically black college/university (HBCU). This study fills in the gaps with in literature by addressing three aims; study findings provide a) analyses of relationships between academic performance (GPA) and factors of resolve and self-efficacy (e.g., grit, self-efficacy, and social self-efficacy), b) an examination of the extent to which GPA varies when considering students’ general self-efficacy, social self-efficacy, and grit; and finally, c) the extent that levels of self-efficacy assessed predict grit. Finding indicate grit as a positive predictor of GPA; additionally, students’ efficacies positively influenced levels of grit. Implications provided and suggestions to collaborate with stakeholders provided.
