Whiteness in Nonwhite: Multiple Consciousness Analysis of Autoethnographic Narratives From Korean Classrooms

Abstract

Inspired by the theoretical, analytic, and practical power of CRT, we attempt to expand the scope of CRT praxis and analyze contexts outside of the US. Extending whiteness as to language, we ask whether and how racism may operate beyond-US: specifically in a non-White historically homogeneous context where normative discourse around stratification is often deracialized and color-mute. Our findings illustrate the nuanced ways in which language can be an epistemic and political tool of othering/ordering and functions as a symbol of whiteness in non-White classrooms marginalizing students’ multiplicative identities. Built on our autoethnographic narrative study, we suggest CRT as useful and valid analytic tool to support more critical and justice-oriented praxis in non-White, homogenous contexts across globe.
