Preservice Teachers' Video Reflection on a STEM Practicum Experience Through FlipGrid

Abstract

This study sought to understand pre-service teachers’ video reflections through the use of FlipGrid, a video-based platform, during their early field experience conducted at a STEM Institute that provided learning activities for upper elementary and middle school students. Using thematic analysis, the transcriptions from the videos responding to a prompt asking the pre-service teachers to select a word to describe their experience was examined for major themes. Most pre-service teachers found the experience positive, felt it confirmed their choice of profession, and broadened their understanding of students and classroom work; with some finding it challenging. Since many pre-service teachers utilize video through social media sites, video reflection may provide a medium that is more comfortable and authentic for them.
