Exploring Effective Pedagogical Practices and Conceptualizations of Transfer in Higher Education

Abstract

In any academic discipline, it is important for students to be able to transfer learning across a variety of educational and non-educational contexts. Despite the key role of transfer in human learning, higher education institutions often find it challenging to enhance students’ transfer skills across contexts. The goals of this qualitative study were to explore (a) how university faculty conceptualize and enhance transfer across disciplines; and (c) what pedagogical practices can be used to enhance transfer in higher education. This study used semi-structured interviews with 11 university faculty from four disciplinary areas. The tree-level coding process resulted in emergent themes that were grouped into three broad categories: (1) Conceptualizations of Transfer; (2) Factors Affecting Transfer; and (3) Pedagogical Practices Enhancing Transfer.
