Safe Spaces at Predominantly White Institutions: How Black College Women Use Hip-Hop to (Re)Construct Black Womanhood and Navigate Academic and Social Spaces on Campus

Abstract

This study seeks to understand the following research questions: (1) How does Hip Hop inform the construction of race, gender, and sexuality among Black women at PWIs? (2) How does Hip Hop impact the identities of Black college women participating in non-BGLOs for Black women? (3) How does Hip Hop inform how Black college women navigate campus academic spaces, social media, and non-BGLOs for Black women? This study adds to previous research in student affairs, higher education, and psychology by providing comprehensive insight into the role of both Hip Hop culture and social media use on the identities, community, and psychosocial well-being of Black women on college campuses.
