Teacher-Led Teacher Learning: Fostering Communities of Practice

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This investigation of a district-initiated teacher leadership program focused on improving instruction for under-served students found high potential for teacher initiative and ample opportunities to shape teacher collaborative teams into Communities of Practice. Four urban elementary schools present a range of cases in which variations in teacher leadership were influenced by school context, teacher experience, and coaching support. Teacher leadership practices and outcomes are revealed in a manner that informs research on how teachers exercise leadership with their peers and informs practice about how to foster teacher leadership focused on instruction.
