Race Match Effect: A Modern Version of the Slave-Breaking Process?

Abstract

The emphasis on hiring more Black teachers is associated with the race match effect studies that show Black children performing at higher levels when they have at least one Black teacher in schools where the majority of the teaching staff is White and female. This paper explores the treatment of Black children in urban school systems that often reinforce practices and goals reflective of White, middle class American society and accept the social constructions of Black children. In order to explore the treatment and perceptions, I conducted a small-scale study on four Black teachers that involved completing pre-study screeners and interviews to discover Black teachers’ management strategies and obligations in educating Black children in urban public schools.
