Examining a Competency-Based Apprenticeship in Health Care: A Pathway for Immigrants

Abstract

This apprenticeship program addresses the talent development pipeline for the health-care occupation of environmental care supervisors. Additionally, this program works with two distinct groups, incumbent workers and immigrants. The case study interviewed individuals employed with the intermediary, employer, and apprentices. Additionally, the case study used documents, news articles, and other interviews. The findings from this study demonstrated that a competency-based apprenticeship is effective in meeting the needs of the employer and employees. The program is creating economic mobility and providing access to a more diverse talent pipeline. The findings concluded that other occupations that are not traditionally using apprenticeship should start to explore this method of preparing their workforce.
