An Exploration of How Second-Generation Afro-Caribbean College Women Make Meaning of Their Race, Ethnicity, and Gender

Abstract

Recent research has pointed to the success of Black women, which may result in colleges ignoring the unique needs of this group. This qualitative case study explores how second-generation Afro-Caribbean college make meaning of their race, ethnicity, and gender. Preliminary findings are derived from 3 second-generation Afro-Caribbean women enrolled at a Hispanic Serving institution. The findings highlight four themes that contribute to the sense of self – religious backgrounds, early education experience, college environment, and community experience.
