Building, Supporting, and Assuring Quality Professional Practice: A Research-Informed Provincial Policy for Teachers, Leaders, and Superintendents

Sat, April 18, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Building, Supporting, and Assuring Quality Professional Practice, our concurrent mixed methods study of teacher growth, supervision, and evaluation in the Canadian province of Alberta was delivered to the Department of Education on March 4, 2018. Fifteen months later the Leadership Standards Advisory Committee recommended approval of a revised policy that applies to “teachers, principals, jurisdiction leaders and superintendents and is aligned with the professional practice standards (Teaching Quality Standard, Leadership Quality Standard or Superintendent Leadership Quality Standard) for the teaching profession in Alberta. Through textual analysis this paper examined the impact of the 2018 study on the updated provincial policy. The fact that the revised policy incorporated a majority of the study’s recommendations is strong evidence of such impact.
