This proposal joins the learning theory of knowledge building in collaborative learning communities with approaches inspired by biological analysis of the relationship between phenotypes and gene-networks. These processes, knowledge building and phenotype emergence from gene-networks, hold resemblances in that they are considered emergent from complex and dynamic interactions. We draw parallels between knowledge building activities and gene-network action. We do so in hopes of developing a method for analysis of collaborative group dynamics through computation guided by the well-established modeling of gene-networks and phenotype variation.
