Flipped Learning in K–12 Classrooms: A Review of the Literature

Abstract

This review of empirical research from 2011-2019 examined the use of flipped learning in K-12 classrooms. The overarching research question was: “Which instructional techniques are used in the individual learning and group learning spaces of K-12 classrooms employing flipped learning?” Findings indicated that studies selected for analyses primarily focused on classrooms using videos in the individual learning space and group work in the group learning space. This review contributes to the growing body of flipped learning research because it targets what types of instruction is being described as flipped learning in K-12 classrooms. By classifying what is characterized as flipped learning, this review assists researchers and practitioners in building a common vocabulary for conducting future research investigating flipped learning.
