Science for Our Children: The Role of Othermothering in a Science Network

Abstract

In this exploratory study, the author presents one principal who drew from various network members enabling her to envision the power and possibilities of science in her community. This work is relevant to the education community as we continue to prepare educators and administrators that will attend to our communities of color. Importantly, some Black women transcend community membership and also serve as othermothers- those who share mothering responsibilities (Collins, 1987). The author relates the ways in which one principal used her social capital to maximize her impact for science as an othermother—to leverage the needs of her community.
