An Extended Model of Policy Context to Enhance the Social Justice Practice of Educational Leaders

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Policy implementation is a crucial site where educational leaders do (or do not) engage in social justice action for diversity, equity, and access–stakeholder/community collaborative practices that address the Annual Meeting theme. We advance policy theory by creating an Extended Policy Context Model that extends “Big P”/“Little P” (Ball, 2008; Author, 2015) and “policy sensemaking” (Spillane & Anderson, 2014; Spillane, Reiser & Reimer, 2002; Weick, 1979; Weick, Sutcliffe, & Obstfeld, 2005) with a “Micro P” policy context construct. Doing so highlights the role human factors play in equitable policy implementation. We argue that explicit exposure to Micro P in pre-service, in-service, and real-world leadership development contexts, should improve social justice in our educational systems and for all education stakeholders.
