Negotiating Educational Possibilities: Parental Involvement Within a Taiwanese Elite School

Abstract

Drawing on a multi-sited global ethnography of global citizenship education at elite schools across the world, this paper examines the role parental involvement plays in preparing students within a Taiwanese context for future lives in Western countries. This paper identifies the ways in which parent’s involvement is motivated by a desire for their children to be highly mobile in an increasingly globalized world. We consider how their involvement facilitates a particular kind of relationship with school officials. This paper also explores how parental involvement influences students’ visions for the future and places considerable, contradictory pressures on them to succeed in normative terms while remaining connected to their cultural origins.
