Migration and the Classroom: A Comparative Study of Education Practices for Supporting New Arrivals in Europe and North America

Abstract

With a surge in migration in recent years, developed countries have scrambled to support education needs of children of migrants. Although research exists on migration & schooling, it pre-dates several substantial waves of immigration following war, persecution, economic insecurity, and violence and arrivals in Europe, U.S., Canada, 2013 - present. This study's purpose: to research and describe models of schooling/curriculum evolving recently to support immigrant children in: Germany, Britain, Italy, Sweden, Canada, through case studies and data analysis. These countries are challenged by unprecedented surges in immigration and increasing linguistic and cultural diversity, often stretching and tensioning existing systems. This study creates a comparative five-year portrait of schooling for migrant children and strives to understand successes and struggles as they unfold.
