Making Space for Equity in Principal Preparation Programs

Mon, April 20, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This article proposes an equity framework – the Equity Series and racial affinity groups – for principal preparation programs that are committed to preparing equity-oriented school leaders. Three central questions guided the study: What are student’s perspectives about principal preparation programs? How do they experience the Urban School Leaders Institute (USLI)? How does an equity-oriented preparation program influence their beliefs, knowledge and practices? The study’s findings suggest that students enrolled in USLI responded favorably to the framework that was enacted to prepare equity-oriented school leaders. In some instances, however, students needed time to adapt to the framework. Regular dialogue and critical reflection supported students in documenting and describing their preparation and evolution to become equity-oriented aspiring school leaders.
