Teaching While Feminist: Life Narratives of Feminist Teachers in U.S. Public Schools

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

This project examines the experiences of feminist teachers in U.S. schools using life narrative interviews. It theorizes feminist schoolwork as a way for teachers to teach dangerously; that is, teach against heteropatriarchy and white supremacy. This project asks the following questions: How can we engage in affirmative sabotage? What mechanisms do teachers have to create moments of affirmative sabotage to disrupt hegemonic schooling? This project places the voices and experiences of feminist teachers at the center of narratives about schooling and positions them as creators of feminist theories and pedagogies through their work in classrooms.
