Counseling Girls With Emotional-Behavioral Difficulties: Perceptions of Caregivers

Tue, April 21, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Caregivers of daughters with emotional-behavioral difficulties provided insight into the impact of counseling and the roadblocks to receiving mental health support for their children. Caregivers were interviewed using basic interpretive qualitative design about their experiences and their perceptions of their daughter’s experiences. Findings related to the counseling experience include the importance of the counselor-client relationship and the benefits of counseling for the caregiver as well as the daughter. Another theme was caregivers’ difficulties accessing competent counseling support.
