Building Math Identity in an After-School Program: Results of a Cluster-Randomized Trial

Abstract

This paper presents results from an experimental study of an after-school program intended to build math identity in 4th and 5th grade students. Math identity is made up of beliefs, attitudes, emotions, and dispositions about math. The study examines After-School Math Plus (ASM+), which includes activities specifically intended to develop math identity, such as connecting students with community role models who do math. Results suggested that there were no statistically significant effects of the intervention on students’ math identity. However, treatment students were more likely than control students to report that one of the themes (Built Environment) was fun and that they would like to participate in similar activities in the future.
