Mapping Access and Opportunity: K–8 Urban Schools as Enclaves of Privilege

Abstract

Grounded in tenets of DisCrit, we examine K-8 schools as enclaves of privilege for white students with disabilities within large urban districts. Using GIS mapping and inferential statistical methods, we concentrate on identifying trends related to attendance at neighborhood schools, particularly K-8 schools, and demographics and rates of inclusion for SWD in one Urban School District. We find that the creation of K-8 schools separate from elementary and middle schools within this district maintains pockets of race and class privilege, as well as more inclusive placements for students with disabilities within the district.
